Understanding the ‘Best Before Date’: How to Save Food, Money, and the Environment

How Many of You Really Understand the “Best Before Date” on Food Packages?

How often do you check the “Best Before Date” on your food packages? And how many of you automatically throw away food once it passes that date? If you’re like many of us, you probably toss it without a second thought, assuming it’s no longer safe to eat.

But here’s the truth: it’s not too late to learn the real meaning behind the “Best Before Date”!

Too Good To Go, a social impact company, is challenging this common misconception with their “Look-Smell-Taste” initiative. The campaign encourages people to check the actual condition of their food before discarding it. Contrary to popular belief, the “Best Before Date” simply indicates the peak freshness of a product. Many foods are still perfectly safe to eat after that date. To help raise awareness, Too Good To Go has added a “Look-Smell-Taste” label on food packaging, reminding us to do a quick check before tossing food.

Save Money, Reduce Waste, and Protect the Planet

Who doesn’t want to save money on food? More importantly, by reducing food waste, you’re not only saving money but also helping the environment. It’s a small change that can have a big impact!

This is so true! Way too much waste is made because we don’t check ourselves whether our food is still consumable. I refuse to throw out the bread and milk unless visibly spoiled. Great point!

    Cheers!

      Hi Nikaela,
Absolutely! It’s so important to trust our own judgment before throwing things out. Cheers!

Have had this conversation with a few people in the past few month. Also I love using Too Good To Go. This post just inspired me to grab a Too Good Too Go order from the local bakery. Thanks for that.
